Cubism

The photos in the Cubism series show dismembered fish and fish parts photographed at markets in Japan.
These are three-dimensional bodies that have been cut up, arranged on a dish or tray, wrapped in plastic foil and in some cases labeled with prices. The emphasized two-dimensionality of the view, which makes it possible to view the divided bodies from different angles at a glance, is remindful of cubist painting. The bowls containing the fish are reminiscent of frames and, in combination with the sometimes collage-like fragments of writing and prices, the cubistic impression becomes even stronger. The fish parts were not simply thrown into the bowl but arranged in a way that is intended to convince potential buyers by means of composition: the product becomes a picture.
